Giovanni's Room: Interpation of Quote

In the novel Giovanni’s Room, written by James Baldwin in part one chapter three; the protagonist David and Jacques are having a conversation about being in a gay relationship. The scene takes places in Les Halles in Paris. Jacques opens the conservations will warning David about having a relationship with Giovanni. Jacques mentions to David ““‘Love him and let him love you…You can give each other something which will make both of you better- forever- if you will not be ashamed, if you will not only play it safe’” (Baldwin 57). This quote is explains that Jacques is telling David to love Giovanni and to not let anybody interfere with their love. Jacques see that David is afraid by society and what others may think about him being gay. Jacques also refers to David to risk falling in love because one never regrets falling in love and to take a chance with Giovanni. At the end of the quote Jacque encourages David to fall in love because if not he will live in regret just like Jacque.
